Surprisingly Good Movies

Over at my brother Luke's blog we've been discussing the worst movies we've ever seen. Here I'd like to start a similar discussion. What movies most surprised you by how good they were? Again, I'm not asking what your favorite movies are, but what movies did you watch expecting to be bad, and ended up enjoying them?

For example, my lists includes:

"Seed of Chucky"
"Constantine"
"The Bourne Identity"

What's on your list?

This will take some thought. I can't believe "Seed of Chucky" is on your list, but then I never saw it because I assumed it would be horrible.

Yep, "Seed of Chucky" is listed first because it is the most surprising. Funny stuff. The arguments between Chucky's parents about how to raise children, for instance. And Jennifer Tilly's parody of herself is a hoot.

Off the top of my head, Bridget Jones and Love Actually. Can't say that I delve too far into movies I totally do not expect to like...however, I can list some darn good Van Damme movies that might fall in this list. These are usually found (and enjoyed) when I am stuck on travel and cannot sleep...

Wow. I've totally been drawing blanks on this one. Susan helped me out a bit.

"Life as a House" - Very good movie. Looked to be too depressing to enjoy, but it was good and enjoyable.

"Shrek 2" - I really didn't like Shrek very much, but the second installment was great fun.

I really should be able to come up with something better. In fact, I have this nagging feeling like I have seen something recently that surprised me like this. I just can't come up with it....

Luke, I remember you telling me about "Life as a House." Matt, I think I've only seen snippets of Bill and Ted's. They were kinda funny. Mr. Gone, I was surprised how good "The Matrix" was. I didn't go in thinking it would be horrible, I knew nothing about it, and then it was great. Thanks for reminding me of that experience.

"National Treasure"

Then again, I'm usually suprised by how much I end up enjoying almost every Nicholas Cage movie I see. My mental picture of Cage as an actor has always been the movie "Firebirds" (a film for Luke's bad movie list). Thus, my expectations going in are usually quite low.

Matt - As soon as I read the words "Keanu Reeves" in your post, I thought of "Point Blank".

Scary Movie 3 is the only thing I can think of. I'm a huge Leslie Nielsen fan, but when it comes to most comedies these days, particularly Scary Movie-like ones, I wasn't expecting a lot. But it turned out to be quite funny, not just because of Leslie Nielsen's parts either.
