Household pet under siege

This is the end of a chase across the house. The marauding baby has driven the beleaguered household pet to high ground.

This video is about a week old. He's been showing keen interest in the cat for a long time, and since he started scooting we've been running interference, and waiting for him to learn a lesson the hard way, just hoping he doesn't get scratched too badly. Well, yesterday James and Scout had a very interactive game of chase. Jae watched closely so she could intervene if it looked like James might get his eyes scratched out, but watched in wonder as the two hit it off.

James scooted up to Scout, and she waited until he was close enough to get a hand on her. She then moved off a few feet, and flopped on her side, her invitation to play. She waited till he got close enough for him to get a hand on her, then moved a few feet further and flopped. I guess this continued for awhile. He got hold of her tail once, and she didn't like that, but she batted at him without extending her claws, I think until Jae rescued her.

Street photography

Street photography, originally uploaded by Josh Gentry.

Street photography, literally. Took this kneeling in the left-hand lane of San Mateo, Northbound, just before Indian School. It was a Saturday morning, traffic was light, they went around me.

I still have no idea what that figure really is.

James admiring his quilt

My mother is an accomplished quilter. Here you see James studying the quilt Mom made for him. Underneath it, the blue one, is the one she made for me when I was about 2, I think. I rock him each night as a part of the bedtime ritual, and Jae saw him examining the carrots and grabbed the video camera. I had a cold, which is why I'm wearing the mask. Thanks Mom, for the beautiful quilts. Much Love and work went into them. And thanks, Jae, for catching this.

Proto-kiss

Thanksgiving 2008

James "kisses" us often. Really he sucks on our face, but you can tell he's trying to kiss you. It's particularly cute when I'm holding him and his Mom walks up close and he leans out, gets her face in both hands, and sucks on her cheek.

After I posted this picture, Susan pointed me to another, similiar picture. See below.

The failure of forgetfullness

The failure of forgetfullness, originally uploaded by Josh Gentry.

Autumn leaves blow in drifts against curbs and the sides of houses and hills. Raked into piles in yards, they scatter, then meander back together where the wind takes them, cartwheeling.

They are brown and brittle; crunch, crackle and fragment as I walk through them, kick through them, dive in and role through them. For all their noisy protest and my reckless expenditure of energy, it will take me a life-time to make them dust...make them dust so that they disappear underfoot, and blow away to sting eyes and drift on windowsills.

I'm in a slump. I took some pictures I really liked, and now I've taken a few rolls with none I really liked. The most recent roll has several pictures that are almost there, but aren't. Like this one. If I'd put the straw on the dark stripe, that might have done it. Frustrating. On the first go through, this is probably the best picture from that roll.br />

Artistic failure

I do some scribbling, occasionally. For the past year or maybe longer I have been sporadically noodling on a new story. One of those inspired by a dream things. I loved the concept. I didn't work on it a bunch at any one time, but over the spread there are some hours in it. A couple weeks ago I did the final edit on it, and admitted what I'd been fearing for awhile: It sucks.

So, no new story :-( Sigh.

Toni is back

Counter Comrade, originally uploaded by Josh Gentry.

Update

Toni got out of the hospital Wednesday and was at Jeri's today. She's not supposed to be out of bed, but she's not much of a rule follower. I chatted with her for almost an hour, while she sat in the same spot as in this picture. She's in better spirits than I would be, or she's faking it well. She has dialysis every other day, and an appointment in November to talk about a transplant.

She liked the, "I'm not dead yet" T-shirt I got her.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I blogged this photo recently, and a little info on the subject, Toni. On Sunday both of Toni's kidneys were removed because of infection. They didn't expect her to survive the surgery. Her mother told me that her first words out of surgery were, "Not dead yet."

I visited her in the ICU today. That was hard. But she was able to have a conversation and smile a couple times. She asked me how Jae and James where, and how my weekend was. She is very brave. Keep fighting, champ.

Breakfast in bed? No way!

Domestic Goddess

Wednesday morning I didn't want to get up. I had pulled the covers over my head and I was procrastinating, counting down the minutes in my head till the last moment I thought I could get up and make it to work on time. The only thing keeping me conscious was the smell of coffee wafting in from the kitchen.

I had about reached the point-of-no-on-time, when Jae walked into the bedroom with a cup of coffee.

"Oh, I love you," I moaned, and propped myself up in bed so I could drink it. After she handed me the cup, Jae got a beach towel and covered my reclining form with it.

"OK, I could spill it," I thought to myself, as I watched her silently leave the room again. I was savoring the first swallow of coffee when she walked back in carrying a plate.

"No way," I cried out, as she rested on my lap a plate with scrambled eggs, toast, and orange slices. She smiled and left me to my breakfast.

As I was finishing up. she walked back into the room and asked, "Do want a ride to work, today?" Oh, I love this woman.

Goofiest thing I've ever seen

Respiratory infections suck

Hard. Coughing started on Sunday. Got worse from there. Today, Thursday, saw the doctor and am now on antibiotics. She also gave me something for the cough that actually worked, and I was able to sleep a few hours. Sort of sleep, anyway. I got 0 sleep last night because of the coughing.

So that's my whining. I'm sure I've felt this bad before, but its been awhile.
